Emmett is the widower of Nora and the father of their two sons. He was friends with the Abbotts before the creatures eradicated most of the human population. He crossed paths with Evelyn Abbott and her family immediately following the death of her husband, Lee. After Regan Abbott ventured out to investigate her theory about a song played over the radio, Evelyn begged Emmett to find her. He did so, saving her life. Regan then convinced Emmett to help her on her journey. The two then found their way to an island, proving Regan's theory to be accurate.
However, a creature soon attacked the island, resulting in the deaths of multiple survivors there. Emmett and Regan then made their way to a nearby radio station, where Emmett was injured by a creature. Regan soon used her hearing aid to weaken the creature, allowing her to kill it.

Day 1[]

Emmett attended his son's baseball game in Millbrook's park along with Lee and Regan Abbott. Emmett shouted out for one of the kids to dive for the plate and asked Regan how to say "dive" in ASL. Suddenly, an unidentifiable object came hurtling towards the town and the game ended abruptly. On his way home, he saw Lee, who asked if his brother had said if anything was going on at the base, but Emmett isn't sure. However, he assured Lee that he would notify him if anything came up.

Emmett was held up at a rail yard when one of his booby traps was tripped. He spotted Evelyn, Regan, and Marcus Abbott running through the field. However, Marcus was then caught in a bear trap. He screamed and attracted a creature. After witnessing Regan and Evelyn kill the creature, Emmett helped them inside and hid them inside a steel, soundproof bunker. He told Evelyn and the kids that they couldn't stay, as there weren't enough supplies. She asked to see his face, realizing that he was Emmett. Hoping to appeal to him, she showed him her newborn son inside a box that the Abbotts had carried with them. A timer went off, and Emmett opened the door to exit the bunker. In that time, the creature seemed to have left the area.
Emmett then told Evelyn that it was safe to talk, as they were under three feet of concrete. He inquired about feedback from the microphone and how it seemed to irritate the creatures, but Evelyn didn't exactly know the science behind it. Evelyn gave her condolences, assuming that Emmett's family was dead. He revealed that his kids died the first day and that his wife, Nora, died just 11 weeks earlier from an illness. Evelyn then asked Emmett if he knew it was Lee when he saw the flame night after night. Emmett admitted that he knew, but he didn't consider coming for them because people had changed since the invasion had begun.
The radio started playing "Beyond the Sea". Emmett revealed that he had been hearing it as well. It had been playing on repeat for the previous four months. Regan wondered why Lee had never heard it before. Emmett explained that it could only be heard from the valley. Regan was then convinced that it was a message from someone, instructing survivors to travel across the sea. However, Emmett told them that there was nothing left and that the song wasn't a message or signal of any kind.
Day 475[]
Emmett arrives just in time to save Regan.
The following day, Emmett learned that Regan had left on her own to cross the sea as the song said and went after her at Evelyn's behest. Emmett tracked Regan down to a stalled train, where she was nearly killed by a creature. He arrived there just in time to kill it and rescued Regan. The two of them raced back to the station and took cover, as the gunshot had alerted the other creatures. Emmett attempted to convince her to come back with him, but she refused. Instead, she convinced him to join her on her journey across the sea.
Day 476[]
Emmett and Regan arrived at the Marina, where they came across a little girl, who was seemingly alone. She was crouched down on the deck and cowering. Emmett cautiously approached and the little girl tied a noose around his neck. The little girl was then joined by a group of scroungy-looking men, who then got violent with Regan, ripping off her jacket and removing her implant. As they began to take her back to the ship, Emmett recalled her telling him how to say "dive" in ASL and instructed her to jump into the water.

Regan followed Emmet's instruction and dove in. With her out of harm's way, Emmett attacked one of the men with the net connected to the rope that was wrapped around his neck. He then used the net to hold the man in place long enough for the creature to attack. Emmett fell backwards into the water, where he struggled for a moment to get the rope unwrapped from around his neck as the creature killed the "Marina Man". One of the creatures noticed Emmett in the water and dove in for him but ended up drowning. The other creature watched helplessly from the ship. Regan then came through in a boat and pulled Emmett out of the water. He opened his mouth and revealed to Regan that he had her implant.
The two of them crossed the sea to an island, where they found a community of people who were seemingly untouched by the creatures. They were then greeted by an island man, who presumed that they had heard the song over the radio and figured it out, but Emmett admitted that it was solely Regan who figured it out. Emmett revealed that it took them just under two days to make it to the island. Emmett then found Regan and returned her implant. He also apologized for ever doubting her.
Day 477[]
Emmett then made his way to the beach and unfolded the drawing of his wife from his pocket. While on the beach, he heard a loud crashing sound and followed it to the edge of the shore, where he found the very same boat that he had seen the creature hanging onto when he and Regan had fled the Marina.
Emmett rushed back to the community to warn them, but he was too late. The creature had already begun attacking people. On his way inside, Emmett grabbed a random child from the field and brought him inside, proceeding to hide him in a closet with another child. Regan, Emmett, and the island man then got into a car and drew the creature away. The island man was killed after they reached the station, pulled away by a creature as he was voicing his intent to return to help his family.

Emmett and Regan snuck through the radio station so as not to be heard by the creature. Regan made her way over the counter and into the main office, where the equipment was located. However, when the door made a creaking sound, the creature came rushing towards them and slashed at Emmett's leg. Regan turned on the broadcast signal and matched with her hearing aid, it created a high-pitched frequency that was transmitted both towards the creature in front her of as well as all the radios within receiving distance of the broadcast. Regan then took a lead pipe and crushed the creature's head.
